Pille's research focused on phylogenetic and functional diversity of plant communities. Phylogenetic diversity measures if and to what extent communities consist of closely or distantly related species. Functional diversity defines if these species have similar or different traits. This enables us to study whether phylogenetic and functional diversity possibly describe broad ecological principles more precisely than the classical measure of species diversity.

Currently she is leading Pille Gerhold´s Lab of Phylogenetic Ecology & Tropical Biology at the University of Tartu.
