My main research area covers community ecology in its broadest sense. I am interested in fundamental questions on how the communities are formed and what is the role of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning, as well as in practical questions on how the communities could be saved or restored.
I completed my PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Helsinki, Finland, where I investigated the effects of negative anthropogenic disturbances (drainage, urbanisation) and restoration on mire invertebrate communities. As well, I explored how differently contrasting urban forest edges affect carabid beetle assemblages in Helsinki. During my MSc studies at Aarhus University, Denmark, I have also performed research on behavioural and physiological aspects of insect ecology which helps to understand community and population level phenomena.
My research at Macroecology workgroup aims to disentangle the biodiversity-productivity relationship in forests considering various taxonomic groups (plants, soil organisms, carabids). As well, I will take into account species pool size variation and historical landscape dynamics in order to reveal the mechanisms of the observed relationship. Finally, I am participating in alvar grassland restoration project where we look at how various aspects of biodiversity are changed due to degradation and restoration of this highly valuable and unique ecosystem.
